TIPS & BENEFITS

The ODL Doorglass Products We Install Are Certified To Meet Florida Building Code DP Requirements

At Coastal Transformations, we strive to help you transform your home and increase your curb appeal with decorative door glass that allows you to bring natural light in, yet keep intrusive eyes out. Even though beauty is important to us, we still think safety should be a priority, which is why we take the time to carefully consider the companies we team up with to provide our door glass products. When it comes to door glass, ODL glass puts the beauty and mystique of handcrafted glass at your door while offering incredible safety ratings to keep the things that matter most safe.

ODL Impact Standards

Ken, our owner, often tells our door glass clients, “If you get hit by a hurricane, your door’s gonna be the least of your problems,” and he’s 100% right because ODL glass is just that good. ODL Severe Weather door glass has a Florida Building Commission (FBC) component approval, FL14935-R4, that allows it to be substituted in any glazed door or sidelight with an approved missile impact FBC approval or Miami-Dade County NOA (odl.com). Simply put, this glass is designed to be able to sustain multiple impacts by a 9-pound 2x4 board shot at 50 feet/second (34 mph).

ODL Design Pressure Requirements

Design Pressure (DP) testing measures the performance of fenestration products (windows, doors, skylights, vents and other openings) to withstand positive and negative pressures. Design pressure requirements can vary based on product location on the building, height of the building, density of buildings, and wind zone designation. The positive DP number is the standard for wind blowing at the building (windward) and the negative DP number represents the vacuum pressure on the opposite side of the building (leeward). The 2017 Florida Building Code (FBC) has wind zone-specific performance requirements for design pressure. Other states continue to adopt DP requirements. All ODL door glass products (decorative door glass, clear door glass, Enclosed Blinds) with FiberMate®, FiberPro®, HP, and Severe Weather frames are certified to meet 2017 Florida Building Code (FBC) DP requirements in 1 and 2 story buildings. (odl.com). Please bear with us and all the technical jargon… the point we’re trying to make here is quite serious. What we’re saying is that the ODL door products are designed to withstand wind speeds of 100 - 130mph, in accordance with Florida Building Code (FBC).

ODL Glass Structural Integrity

Glass is a material known to be easily susceptible to damage and shattering. ODL glass is manufactured and rigorously tested to industry standards for air tightness, water tightness, wind resistance, and forced entry resistance. ODL doorglass products have been tested to the AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 Standard/Specification for Windows and Doors, and other standards, such as TAS 201, 202 and 203. ODL door glass in TriSYS®, Evolve®, VentLite, standard, and many other frames were tested at an independent third-party test agency to AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 specifications and were rated very highly. (odl.com). ODL glass is also certified to NAMI's Quality Assurance Program and ODL Doorglass Units are listed in NAMI's Structural Program so you can rest assured that the products we’re installing in your home are of the highest quality.

ODL Glass Non-Impact Standards

ODL caters to Florida Building Codes in its manufacturing and testing processes, which is why all standard sizes and designs of ODL door glass have Florida Statewide Approval through the Florida Building Commission (FBC). Specifically, ODL door glass has the following non-impact approval per the Florida Building Commission:

  • FL15260-R5 and FL 20335-R1—All ODL door glass (decorative door glass, clear door glass, Enclosed Blinds) in various frame styles of FiberMate®, FiberPro®, or HP resins
  • FL14440-R3—Vent door light with screen assembly
  • FL4554-R5—Transom. (odl.com)
It’s a lot of technical information to take in… we know. The important takeaway is that ODL glass is manufactured to withstand even Florida’s severe weather. It’s a very reassuring feeling to know that you can have a beautiful glass door/front entryway and at the same time be protected from a windstorm or from flying debris. At Coastal Transformations, we’re always looking out for your best interests and we’d love to help you take your first steps on the journey to transforming your home’s curb appeal.
