Might Sunlight Be The Coronavirus Cure We’ve Been Looking For?

At Coastal Transformations, we can’t stop singing the praises of sunlight. For years, we’ve spoken about the benefits a little extra natural light can have for your health, your mood, productivity, and for increasing the beauty of your home. Now that the topic at many tables has turned to the coronavirus pandemic and how it can be curbed, we are also seeing evidence that indicates sunlight can help.

A U.S. government scientist said the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) appears to die quickly in direct sunlight, both in the air and on surfaces. Paul Dabisch, a senior research scientist at the Department of Homeland Security’s biodefense research laboratory, said that initial lab tests show sunlight, higher temperatures, and humidity are hurdles for the survival of the coronavirus. - www.wwlp.com.

Research done at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center was first revealed by William Bryan, the acting undersecretary for science and technology at Homeland Security. He described the “most striking observation to date,” that ultraviolet rays from the sun may have a powerful effect on the virus.

The National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center, or NBACC, is a massive 160,0000 square foot facility located on the biodefense campus of the Department of Homeland Security at Fort Detrick. The lab was originally commissioned in response to the anthrax letters of 2001. The center, through its research, found that sunlight, within minutes, has the ability to inactivate the virus on surfaces and in the air. Scientists say that could have a profound effect on eradicating the virus on everyday items such as shopping carts, playground equipment, and outdoor furniture.

While there’s still some research to be done to draw specific conclusions regarding the amount of time and intensity at which surfaces should be exposed, the preliminary results are positive. We encourage you to continue to stay safe and enjoy the sunlight. It may not be a magic cure to wipe out our coronavirus problems quite yet, but it’s definitely beneficial for your health and mood, not to mention your productivity!

As we all continue to do what we can to deal with the current Coronavirus pandemic, we’d like to remind you to take the necessary steps to stay safe - wash your hands frequently, wear a mask and/or gloves, practice physical distancing, etc. If you’re interested in making changes to your home, we invite you to give us a call to discuss the possibilities. Please stay safe and remember the future is bright, and we’ll get there together.
