Natural Light Has Amazing Benefits for Children & Teens

A few weeks ago, kids all across South Carolina and the U.S. returned to school for another year of learning and growth. In commemoration of all the children - those entering a new grade, those transitioning from middle school to high school, or those starting school for the first time, we thought now would be the perfect time to write an article about just how beneficial natural light is for growing bodies.

Natural Light for Good Health

Natural light has been shown to have numerous health benefits for individuals (kids and adults alike). It is a great resource for vitamin D, which has a number of benefits. Research has found that spending time outdoors in the sunlight lowers a child's risk of developing nearsightedness because sunlight aids in the healthy development of the eye and vision. Additionally, research has claimed that sunlight exposure in childhood may help prevent the development of multiple sclerosis (MS) later in life.

Natural Light Promotes Healthy Physical Growth

We’ve heard it before - getting some sunlight is great for increasing your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is known to help strengthen teeth and bones. Studies have also shown that frequent sunlight exposure results in healthy growth and weight, and good dental health. Sunlight may also have an effect on children’s circadian rhythm. Exposure to natural light during the day and minimal artificial light at night can help them have a more restful and regulated sleep pattern.

Natural Light Increases Concentration

A study of 21,000 students in three different states in the U.S. found that students in classrooms with ample daylight progressed 20% faster on math tests and 26% faster on reading tests in one year than students with limited or no daylight. ( Natural light can also boost children’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and reducing depression.

Natural light is useful for more than just saving energy/electricity and beautifying your home. Daylight is vital to our health as humans, although getting enough daylight is often hard with our modern lifestyles. Luckily, inventions like skylights and solar tubes, and design choices that favor large windows and glass doors, have made accessing natural light easier.
