The Importance Of Natural Light For Seniors

We’ve been preaching the benefits of natural light for years - the way it can brighten up a space, reduce energy costs, and improve your health, mood and productivity. But when it comes to the mature population, natural light has a variety of benefits, especially for those who spend most of their days indoors.

Regulating Circadian Rhythm

Increasing natural light access helps to regulate the circadian rhythm, which leads to improvements in sleep, mood, thinking and even eyesight! Light plays a big role in the circadian rhythm, because it tells the brain when to produce melatonin, controlling sleep and wake times. A lack of melatonin often leads to sleep problems, which can be factors in serious conditions like depression and heart disease. Fortunately, there are ways you can increase the amount of natural light in the home to enhance the health of the seniors.

Increasing Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for strong bones. Considering that many seniors have degenerative bone diseases such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, increasing access to natural light can help increase their levels of vitamin D absorption.

Improving Mood

Natural light has been shown to increase serotonin levels, aka the “happy hormone” in the brain. For seniors with depression and other mood disorders, getting more access to natural light on a daily basis can decrease depression, sadness, apathy and anxiety.

Reducing Pallor

Older people can sometimes develop pale skin or sallowness from a variety of factors, including sickness, medications, lack of exercise, poor diet and anemia. Increasing your elder loved one’s access to natural light can help return that glow to their skin so they not only look better but feel better too.

If you’ve got a senior in your home, consider increasing their access to natural light with door glass, windows and skylights. The more natural light they absorb, the better they’ll feel. Plus, natural light has many benefits for the entire family! Call us today to learn how we can help you increase the natural light in your home.
